Truth, Populism, Internet - Fake News and Power in the Digital Age
Join our discussions in the FAKE NEWS series of events: Constanze Kurz (CCC) will start the series with a presentation on December 4th.
On 15 January and 5 February 2019 there will be two panel discussions on the topic.
The panel discussions will be held in German!
"Truth, Populism, Internet - FAKE NEWS and Power in the Digital Age" is a joint series of events organized by the University and City Library of Cologne, the Center for Data and Simulation Science, the Department of Communication and Marketing, and the Institute for Media Culture and Theatre of the University of Cologne. It takes part in the discussions of the exhibition "Medienapokalypsen: Hopes and Fears of Media Change". All dates take place in the seminar building of the university, in conference room 004 on the ground floor. We will then invite you to a small drink.
The fact that the British data analysis company "Cambridge Analytica" evaluated millions of data from Facebook users for Donald Trump's election campaign in 2016 is one of the most recent shocks in the history of social networks. Through our individual user behavior, we produce a dense information network that is not only highly sought-after in the advertising industry, in order to be able to grasp us even better as potential customers. Obviously, new target groups for the placement of deliberate false reports also emerge from the data profiles. These deceptive maneuvers, known as "fake news," can promote approval of certain political camps and thus manipulate the formation of opinion. Eyewash with populist slogans contrasts with balanced reports - a power game that voters can hardly identify anymore.
The Internet, with its revolutionary possibilities for participation, is just as dangerous for democratic balance because of its sometimes opaque mechanisms. Educational institutions from school to university therefore have an important role to play in imparting practical media skills and reflecting on digital life.
