Latin - German psalms - printed 1535
Psalmi <dt.> Der Psalter latein vnd[und]// teutsch
Cöllen: Peter Quentel 1535
Shelfmark: WFI111
This work from Peter Qutentell's Offizin is a printing from 1535 made in Cologne. In the 16th century the family members were pro-catholic publicists, focussing on colloquial literature, as well as the bible translations. This book contains latin psalms, followed by the german version. The translation was done by Dietrich Loher von Strathum (1495-1554), a curate of the Cathusian monastery of Cologne.
The original cover was a simple parchment envelope held together with a cord. This medieval book cover is not completely preserved. Due to the loss of the front cover, an unprotected handwritten fragment with red and blue rubrication is visible. A closer determination of this frament is still pending.

Anthology of the Council of Trento - printed 1571
Sacrosancti et Oecumenici Concilii Tridentini, Paulo III., Iulio III. et Pio IV. ... celebrati, Canones et decreta. Soteaulx, Jean [Bearb.]; Lucius, Horatius [Bearb.]
Antverpiae: Plantin 1571
Attached works: Additae praeterea sunt ad fi nem Pii IV. Bullae. Una cum triplici ... indice.
Shelfmark: WFVIII41
This anthology is from the group "Concilia", in which some texts were bound together. The seven different prints are from the years 1549, 1570 and 1571. Six scripts were printed in the office of the famous printer Plantin (Christoffel Plantijn) in Antwerp. Plantin received the privilege of printing liturgical books from Philip II, King of Spain and ruler of the Spanish Netherlands. However, it did not prevent the businessman working for the Protestant General States of the Netherlands.
The manuscripts contained herein are all under the sign of the Council of Trent (1545-1563), to which "Canones et decreta Sacrosancti Oecumenici (...)" are attached in the 1571 edition. Thus the Tridentinum stands for far-reaching church reforms which were passed in the course of the Counter-Reformation. An edition of the Index of Prohibited Books (Index librorum prohibitorum) from 1570, which can be found in the anthology, belongs to this context.
The previous owner of the book had these prints carefully bound into a volume. The double-headed eagle of the House of Habsburg also decorates the binding.
The handwritten entries of possession refer to the Imperial Abbey of Malmedy (Stablo-Malmedy).

Romae: in typogr. Medicea 1591
Shelfmark: WFI121
Printed in 1591 in Rome, this special book 'The Gospel of Jesus Christ' is written in Latin and Arabian. Every arabic line is followed by the latin version. In order to produce arabic texts, the 'Typographia Medicae' was founded in 1584 by Ferdinando I. de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuskany, at the request of the pope.
The artwork is presented in 149 woodcarvings, while every page is imbedded in a doubled frame with illustrations. All arabic prints were made by the french punchcutter Robert Granjon.
Wallraf's volume is covered in parchment with a bicoloured handwriting. Due to the name above the text, the fragment of a liturgic music manuscript is clearly visible.

Grétry: The revolutionary composer of the King - printed 1789
A really interesting book:
Grétry, André-Ernest-Modeste: Mémoires ou essai sur la musique
Shortly before the attack on the Bastille, the composer from Liège published his memoirs in Paris and in his hometown. He openly sympathized with the revolution, although he was employed at the king's court in Paris. The book contains music excerpts and texts of his compositions. In the facade of the Louvre a statue reminds of him. In the première part of his Essai, he immediately enters with the sentence "[he] not only owes his moral but also his physical existence to music". Wallraf described the volume with "Wallraf Prof. á Cologne" as his property.
